Newsome Joins the Buckeye Party

In one of the craziest recruiting blitzes I've ever seen, Glenville DE Jonathan Newsome has committed to Ohio State. This makes him #23 overall and the fifth verbal in the last 72 hours. So how significant is this?

From a strictly ratings perspective, you'd probably consider this a "quality" commitment, but not a jaw-dropping elite player. Newsome is rated as a 3-star for both Rivals and Scout, and his offer list is upper Big Ten (Wisconsin, Illinois) and Big East (West Virginia). However, he didn't garner a lot of national attention.

But for Ohio State, there's nothing but excitement about this announcement. Newsome was offered early this year, before the wave of offers in response to the Illini's maniac strategy of offering every player from Ohio with a pulse. They like Newsome, who has performed extremely well at a number of camps.

He's also a sign that the Buckeyes recruiting juggernaut waits for no man - or for only a few very men. Glenville kids love to wait till the end to commit, but Newsome clearly needed to take action sooner rather than later. This probably ends the chances of Pat Muldoon joining the class - and possibly even Corey Adams, if he even wanted to come.
