As has been rumored for some time, Massillon RB DeVoe Torrence will not be part of Ohio State's 2008 recruiting class. Though no specific reason has been offered, sources say that both academic and legal problems could be the cause of the withdrawal. Ohio State fans wish DeVoe the best, as he's a promising athlete and reportedly a good kid. Hopefully it won't have an impact on his brother Devon, a freshman wide receiver on this year's team.
As far as the impact to OSU, it's actually minimal. The Buckeyes have Beanie Wells and Maurice Wells for one more year. Brandon Saine, fully rehabilitated from his surgery, will likely be the #2 back next season with three years of eligibility left. And 4-star Boom Herron was not forced to burn his redshirt last season, giving him a full four seasons if desired. The Buckeyes will also surely be in the hunt for at least one premier 2009 RB. Though Ohio is not particluarly loaded at the position, they've made contact with out-of-state stars like Larry Caper (MI) and Bryce Brown (KS).
The move reduces Ohio State's current verbal commitments to 17.
